Overview
The MRP Mass Firm function provides the user the means to take control of Multiple Planned or Firmed Orders simultaneously by changing the status of the order. Sections exist for both Work Orders and Inventory Requisitions.
Application
Changing the status of a Planned Order to Firm changes the MRP Planning tactic from scheduling the order to recommending changes to the order. Changing a Work Order from status Firm to status Released indicates the Work Orders has been released to production and work may begin. Changing a Inventory Requisition from Firm to Approved indicates a commitment to a vendor may be made.
Planned Orders are under the control of the MRP planning logic and will be planned / scheduled accordingly. Firmed Orders, Approved Orders and Released Orders are under the control of the planner and cannot be changed by MRP. If MRP detects a condition where the Firm Order, Approved Order or Released Order should be changed, an Action Message is generated.
Controls exist to Reverse the status of Inventory Requisitions from Approved back to Firm and from Firm back to Planned and to Reverse the status of Work Orders from Released back to Firm and Firm back to Planned. Changing Inventory Requisitions and Work Orders back to a status of Planned is changing the control of the order from the planner back to the MRP system to be planned accordingly.
Using Mass Firm to Develop a Production Plan
Establishing a Firm work order schedule that will not be changed by MRP is one step in creating a stable production plan representing a clear statement of demand. Using the Firm status, work orders may be scheduled at a different rate (Quantity and Time) than customer/forecast demand. The rate scheduled is then the driver for any lower level sub-assembly or purchased component demand. MRP Planning will not reschedule a Firm order; therefore the production schedule remains stable. MRP Planning will only make recommendations in the form of Action Messages against Firmed orders.
Using Mass Firm to Develop a Purchasing Plan
Using the Firm status, purchase orders may be scheduled at a different rate (Qty and Time) than demand is dictating. Vendors may not always be able to deliver to you specific request date and a buyer may choose to alter the supply plan due to factors unknown to MRP Planning. Changing the status to Firm creates a fixed schedule in identifying available supply. MRP Planning will only make recommendations in the form of Action Messages against Firmed Requisitions.
