Overview
Material Requirements Planning (MRP) is a material planning tool used to plan and manage the materials used in the manufacturing process. The MRP system is intended to ensure material availability, maintain inventory levels in accordance with company policies, and plan manufacturing activities, delivery schedules, and purchasing activity.
MRP incorporates the variables from multiple disciplines (Supply, Demand, Engineering, Sales, Forecast, Manufacturing, etc.) in creating a Material Plan that reflects the operating practices and strategies of the company.
The Material Plan represents a focus point for responsible parties to analyze output and take action. Managing and controlling the Material Plan provides a predictable outcome from which business decisions are made.
MRP is controlled and managed via major functional areas within the system. Within each area, related settings affect the control and logical behavior of the system. Some areas allow the user to interact with the plan by taking control and transitioning from an MRP plan to an actual plan (confirmed by the user).
